About

The 7th International Workshop on Advanced Spectroscopy and Optical Materials (IWASOM) starts on Sunday, July 10, 2022, and finishes on Friday, July 15, 2022. The Workshop will be held at the University of Gdańsk in Gdańsk-Oliwa. IWASOM will provide an international forum for exchanging information on advanced spectral methods, optical devices, physics and chemistry of novel optical materials and related applications. The scientific program will consist of key lectures (30 min), invited lectures (30 min), oral (15 min) and poster presentations.

The IWASOM Conference will continue the tradition established by the previous six meetings organized at the University of Gdańsk.

The initiator and chairman of the conference was professor Marek Grinberg. He had dedicated his scientific career to the investigation of optical materials activated with transition metals and lanthanides. He was best known for employing in his research a rare experimental technique – high-pressure spectroscopy. His sharp mind and extraordinary personality made him much admired among fellow scientists.

Prof. Marek Grinberg passed away on June 27, 2020. We would like to honor and dedicate the 7th IWASOM conference to him.

Venue & Travel

The 7th International Workshop on Advanced Spectroscopy and Optical Materials (IWASOM) starts on Sunday, 10 July 2022, and finishes on Friday, 15 July 2022. The Workshop will be held at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Gdańsk. The Faculty is situated in the Campus of the University of Gdańsk in Gdańsk Przymorze (see the map of campus).

Gdańsk is the Polish maritime capital with the population nearing half a million. It is a large centre of economic life, science, culture, and a popular tourist destination. Lying on the Bay of Gdańsk and the southern cost of the Baltic Sea the city is a thousand years old. With its Hanseatic tradition, it has for ages played a major role in the commercial relationships between Northern and Western Europe on the one hand, and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe on the other hand. Today, Gdańsk is the capital of the Pomeranian province and an important administration centre.

For more information, see an excellent web page of Gdańsk and tourism information (see For Tourists).

The conference place can be easily reached by any means of transportation.

By plane

In recent years, Lech Wałęsa Airport in Gdańsk has become one of the main air transport centres in Poland. The airport provides numerous convenient connections to major European airports. Direct flights to Gdańsk can be checked here.

From Lech Walesa Airport in Gdańsk Rębiechowo you can take a train (best option), taxi or a bus.

Train timetable can be found on SKM web page. You start at Gdańsk Port Lotniczy and take a train in direction of Gdańsk Wrzeszcz (some trains go also to Gdańsk Główny). If you want to go directly to conference place you have to alight at Strzyża railway station (sixth stop). If you want to go to Gdańsk Główny station and you did not cought direct train, you will have to change train in Gdańsk Wrzeszcz (seventh stop), and take SKM in direction Gdańsk Główny (or Gdańsk Śródmieście). The SKM train tickets – you can buy the tickets in a ticket machine at the railway station or directly from the conductor at the head of the train.

Time table of buses is under links 110, 210, N3 (night bus). All buses go to Gdańsk Wrzeszcz. Bus tickets – you can buy the tickets in a bus or in a ticket machine at the bus stop.

By train

If you want to get to Gdańsk by train you should alight at the station Gdańsk Wrzeszcz or Gdańsk Oliwa. Then you should transfer to a SKM train and alight at the station Gdańsk Przymorze Uniwersytet Gdański. SKM train timetables are available on SKM web page. SKM train tickets – you can buy the tickets in a ticket machine at the railway station or directly from the conductor at the head of the train.

Public transportation

The Campus of the University of Gdańsk is very well communicated with the other parts of Gdańsk and also Sopot and Gdynia. SKM train train – is one of the easiest way to transport in Tricity (Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot). SKM train timetables are available here. SKM train tickets – you can buy the tickets in a ticket machine or ticket office at the railway station or directly from the conductor at the head of the traina

Tram

Trams are going from Campus of the University of Gdańsk to Gdańsk Oliwa – tram no. 5, 6, 12 (park, cathedral church), Gdańsk Jelitkowo – tram no. 6 (beach) and to the centre of Gdańsk – tram no. 6 and 12.

Buses

122 (direction Sopot or Gdańsk Wrzeszcz/Airport). It stops near Campus of the University of Gdańsk.
149 from Campus of the University of Gdańsk goes to Gdańsk Wrzeszcz railway station.

Buses and trams timetables you can find on http://ztm.trojmiasto.pl/.

Taxi

Taxi is the best solution for return from late night parties. It is not too expensive. When taking a taxi, it is better to call a cab than to take one from a taxi rank – you get the right for price reduction.

Weather

In Poland, the long term average temperature in this time of spring is 18°C. However, daily minimum and maximum temperatures go down to +10°C (50°F) and up to +26°C (78°F). For more information about the actual weather conditions in Gdańsk, please click here.

Time

The time zone is GMT + 1 hour.

Voltage

Electricity in Poland is 230 Volt AC.

Money and banking

Polish currency is Polish złoty (PLN or zł). The exchange rate of złoty to other currencies is variable. So we recommend to check the rate before you visit Poland. You can check current rate here.

Currency exchange: If you wish to exchange euro (or other currency) into PLN you have at your disposal exchange desks at border crossings, airports, railway stations, travel offices, hotels and special exchange counters called “kantor”. Traveler’s check can be exchanged at every bank, but not at private exchange counters. No commission fee is charged at kantors. Cash machines are very common. There are many banks in Poland. They are usually open from Monday till Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
